Gmail is losing its Capital Letters!

I’ve recently noticed that my Gmail is losing its capital letters. A couple of days ago I noticed that my ‘Inbox’ has become ‘inbox’. It looks a bit unusual since all my other folders start with capital letters, such as ‘Starred’, ‘Sent Mail’, and ‘Spam’. Today I was composing an email and I’ve noticed that the ‘to’ and ‘from’ have also lost their capital letters though ‘Subject’ is ok. Is this just happening to me or have other Gmail users experienced this? On an off-chance, I’ve tried various different browsers and it is still the same. And I even changed back to the default theme with no effect.

So what is the reasoning for this? Has the world started to run out of capital letters?! Fortunately there still seems to be an ample supply of capital ‘S’ for our ‘Starred’, ‘Sent Mail’, ‘Spam’ and ‘Subject’.

Or am I just getting old? I do not use text-speak; I believe there is a difference between ‘for’ and ‘4′; the words ‘to’ and ‘too’ have very different meanings and neither are the same as ‘2′; I still add apostrophes to my text messages even though it requires the special symbol menu; and I still start my sentences with capitals. Am I just getting old?

Anyway, can other Gmail users (or do I mean gmail) check their inbox and let me know if it is an Inbox or an inbox?

Um. I believe you are getting old. You’re not hip and cool anymore (I think there was a 34 second period in 1993 where you were sort of hip and semi-cool). Maybe you should buy yourself a mac?

No,. you’re not getting old; mine has done the same in the last couple of days and googling a bit a few others have noticed it. My wife also has seen it on her gmail but my daughter hasn’t!

Any news on what’s causing it would be great – can’t be a firefox addon or theme as it happens in IE as well.

Thanks Simon – I’m glad it isn’t only me. Interesting to hear that you have a little i while your daughter doesn’t!

I’ve tested it with Firefox, Safari, Chrome, and IE 7, so I agree that it can’t be anything to do with the browser or some browser add-on. Since you have the issue though your daughter doesn’t, then it can’t be geographical. It must be something associated with each account – though I haven’t found a setting called ‘Use little letters for inbox’! If I find out what is causing it I’ll add a comment to this blog, and let me know if you find the cause and solution. in the meantime i’ll try 2 b more cool (it has been a while since 1993) by not using capital letters ;-)

Same here; “Inbox” and “To” are now “inbox” and “to”. I don’t handle change well!

You came up in my google search of the same problem. :)

It’s only in Eng(UK). Change to Eng(US) and the capital comes back. To be honest this infuriates me more.

I just created a gmail account twice because it wont capitalize the first letter of my name which is the first part of my email. It looks really unprofessional but i guess i am just going to have to keep it that way.
