Why Blog?

This is my first post to my first blog. Previously, I have viewed the craze of blogging as part of the “LOOK AT ME”, “LOOK AT ME”, “LOOK AT ME” egocentric culture. It appeared that vast numbers of people wanted to spout on about everything with no-one actually listening to anyone. And there is an element of a popularity contest, with people trying to build their blog to have the greatest readership, or building their Facebook friend network to prove how popular they are. So why blog? The following are the reasons I’m giving this a go:

  • I find that the act of writing forces me to think and structure my ideas. I often find that attempting to express my ideas in writing helps me to sort out the core of my ideas from the details.
  • A blog allows my thoughts and ideas to be peer-reviewed. By blogging, I’m open myself to criticism and ridicule, though I know that I’ll really appreciate the peer-review of some of my ideas.
  • A way to collaborate on-line. I would like to invite people to comment on, and enter discussions on the blog topics.
  • Working as a software engineer can be quite socially isolating. I see blogging as an opportunity to meet and network with other people like myself. There are many people with similar interests to myself, who may live just down the street or on the opposite side of the world, so I imagine this may be a way to find other like-minded people.
  • I hope that the practice of writing will help me to improve my writing style. I would like to learn to write in a style that is rich and powerful, though easy to read. I am sure that practice helps.
  • An experiment! Taking an agile approach to life, I think that one should use many spike solutions to determine what is beneficial. This is my experiment in blogging.
